This is a series of atlases, written by Colin McEvedy and published by Penguin. Most are in landscape format, which suits the shape of Europe. They have the maps on the right-hand pages, with the text relevant to them on the facing page. Most of the maps are political, like the ones shown above; but they are interspesed with some maps showing populations, religions, and trade routes in the left-hand image above, you can see some of a trade-route map showing through from the previous page.
The Penguin Atlas of Medieval History is the first atlas I ever bought, when it was published, in 1961.
